NHL is back but full salaries are not, according to the NHL employees (Part 2)
The NHL staff had been hoping that the tournament would restore full paychecks now. The tournament was set to continue playing and began to collect money from TV deals and other sources.
NBA and Major League baseball reps, whose seasons were also disrupted by the pandemic, have continued to pay their tournament staff full salaries. In April, the NFL reduced the salaries of managers who made more than $ 100,000. In May, home workers could work from home, saying they expected to reinstate those jobs.
The salary cut of the sports staffs due to the pandemic
Rob Manfred, MLB commissioner, and his senior staff agreed to a 35% pay cut during the pandemic. Meanwhile, Adam Silver, the NBA commissioner, and top 100 tournament executives agreed with 20% cut.
The NBA cut some jobs in June but said those were related to a long-term strategy. They insist that it was not due to the result of the pandemic. Roger Goodell, the NFL commissioner, said in April that he had cut his salary completely.
The affected NHL employees who will arrive in one of the two central cities on July 23 represent a variety of jobs that help with tournament functions. They security, media relations, game operations, production of social media and radio technicians, and imaging technicians. There is also at least one ticket coordinator, although fans are not allowed to attend any of the games now.
According to an NHL employee, the number of employees deployed to restart the tournament was similar to the number of tournaments submitted for a typical Winter Classic outdoor game every January. Except this time, their mission will last for at least two months, instead of more than one game.
The solutions to prevent the pandemic
Predicting the resumption of the game, the tournament sent staff coronavirus test kits. They had to manage a video call themselves with the doctor, then send it to the lab. Those who have to travel to either of the two downtown cities are expected to have a two-day quarantine.
Their trip will be limited to trips between the hotel and game locations. The limitation is applied until the last game is played, at the end of September or early October. Employees staying in safe hotels who need to leave for any reason will have to test negative for four days in a row before they are allowed to leave the quarantine.
